Nowthen Recycling Center

The Nowthen Recycling Center is open with the intention of keeping Nowthen green! Recycling offers numerous benefits, including conserving natural resources, reducing pollution, and saving energy, ultimately contributing to a more sustainable and economically viable future! Residents are encouraged to bring in items like appliances, plastics, cardboard, cans, string lights, and much more! The recycling center takes a variety of items for free and also has a list of items that require a fee to be recycled.

Recycling drop-off procedures for PAID recycling:

Items that require a fee to be recycled should be paid for in the city office Monday-Friday 8 AM - 4 PM, then brought to the recycling center Tuesday or Thursday 10 AM - 4 PM, or the second and fourth Saturday 9 AM - 12 PM. You will receive a receipt and a red PAID sticker notating items. The white receipt copy will be given to you to show the recycling attendant; the yellow receipt copy will be kept by city office staff. Credit card payments can be taken over the phone and in person. (A 3% service charge applies to all credit card transactions.)

Attention!

The Recycling Center ONLY accepts CLEAN recyclables (glass & plastic containers, steel, tin, & aluminum cans, etc.) Make sure all leftover food and other residues are washed out before recycling them. Containers with food residue are considered contaminated and are thrown into the garbage. PLEASE RINSE YOUR OWN CONTAINERS! We also ONLY accept DRY FLATTENED cardboard. The Recycling Center is under 24-HOUR SURVEILLANCE. Any items left outside the door during open or closed hours are considered to be illegally dumped. Residents who choose to dump WILL receive a citation and be fined.

CARDBOARD BOX NOTICE: Cardboard boxes MUST be cut into at least a 28" width by 58" length before dropping them off at the Recycling Center.

The nowthen recycling center accepts plastic number 1, which is used for items like beverage bottles and cleaning solution bottles.

The Nowthen recycling center accepts plastic number two, which is used for products like milk jugs, detergent bottles, and shampoo bottles.

The Nowthen Recycling Center accepts Plastic number 5, which is used for products like single serving yogurt cups, medication bottles, and ketchup bottles.

Thanks to the Elk River Area Women of Today Group, the recycling center now accepts a variety of plastic bags, including grocery bags, bread bags, dry cleaning bags, ice bags, and pallet wrap.

The recycling center does not accept "crinkly" film such as chip bags, candy wrappers, or floral wrap. We also no not accept fresh produce wrapping, compostable bags, pet food bags, heavy duty buckets, or styrofoam.
